...is nearly upon us! And by that of course I mean FEST SEASON! ::runs around in little circles and throws Santa-shaped confetti:: In case it isn't obvious, I'm just a little bit excited about the holiday fests starting. I've already created spreadsheets for keeping track of what I've read. ::is a big dork:: From the mod end of things, everything for Kinky Kristmas is caught up and ready to start running on Tuesday. The stuff we've received so far is fantastic. No matter what other fests you plan to follow next month, you definitely want to keep an eye on Aside from that, the only fest I'm participating in this year is So, f-list, tell me: What fests are you participating in this year? Where will you be reading/viewing and commenting? And remember: No matter what fests you watch and participate in this year, be sure to take a few moments to express your enjoyment of the works you view and read. Without the wonderful authors and artists, there would be no fandom as we know it. ♥ |

Wow, so behind with the scheduled posts! I'll make a point to catch up tomorrow! In other news... I am so happy the holiday is nearly over and people are coming back, you have no idea! It was way too quiet online for the last few days. It felt like the zombie apocalypse was upon us or something. I was close to boarding up my windows and looking for my cricket bat. Also, I never realized just how much I depend upon all of you folks to keep me motivated. I was completely lost and useless without the Usual Suspects around! And then I found a few people on Y!M this evening, and my fic magically became unstuck. ::snort:: Anyway... HI! Don't leave again any time soon, okay?! ::glomps and clings:: |

The post I wrote last night and didn't send 'cos I'd just posted something else and I always feel ridiculous making two posts in an hour: I like the dressing. Rob makes the best turkey dressing in the world. He makes croutons from sourdough bread & italian dressing, and it's got sausage and ground beef and celery and onions, and chantrelles & crimini mushrooms and cherries and water chestnuts. And Blossom came down from Wolf Creek and made cranberry relish; yaaay! and I made mashed potatoes, and Gail made apples-and-sweet-potatoes with the recipe Rob got from the WitchesWithBrains yahoogroup, and we had brussels sprouts and candied carrots, and pumpkin pie that Rob made yesterday. And turkey. And gravy made from the turkey drippings. Mygods I'm stuffed. It's all really, really yummy food. And we'll have leftovers for daaaaayz. Including enough cranberry relish to make piroshkis tomorrow and maybe to have to take to work next week. And I'm, like, DRUGGED. From the tryptophan. I want to sleep now and wake up... Tuesday. Instead, we have four extra people in our room who are watching the movie "Crowley" while I try to find new fanfic. This entry is crossposted at http://elf.dreamwidth.org/284746.html. |

Title: The Needs of the Revolted Pairing: Sarek/OFC Rating: NC17 Words: ~800 Warning: dubious consent Summary: The kink meme prompt was for Sarek to get tired of his people talking smack about Amanda and Vulcanishly telling them to stick it. However, as it was on the kink meme, there is sex. A/N: I have fooled with this a bit more (largely for clarity) since posting it over there last night while I was taking a break from the more substantial fic that is currently taunting me. |

I put together a list of Pagan terms for use by nonpagans, specifically writers, at It's about 2700 words long. I'd welcome any feedback or questions; part of me thinks it's okay, and part thinks it's about 1/3 done and needs at total rewrite--but if I waited until I thought it was "finished," I'd never get it posted. And there really isn't enough info available *about* Pagans that's not written for people who are joining/members of Pagan religions. And incompleteness is not necessarily wrong, in this case. It's more important to me that nonpagans understand the complexity of the issues than that they learn the details involved. This entry is crossposted at http://elf.dreamwidth.org/284671.html. |

I appreciate your industrious hacking away at the (somewhat-past-)due fic, but some of these errors of logic and departures from expectation as you go along are a bit ridiculous. For instance, "building" and "bukkake" (of which there is none expected in this fic) are really quite not at all the same thing, and are not interchangeable. Pls to type what (and only what) the brain says now. Thx, Me. I originally posted this at http://florahart.dreamwidth.org/100 |

So, since I've moved, I go to work by train, which is good as it gives me time for reading, etc. Except that tonight, I managed to get onto the wrong train, and arrived at the storage station. *facepalm* Thankfully, the train driver was very helpful, and managed to find a colleague that went back to Lyon and could leave me at the station before the last train. :D This entry was originally posted at http://snakeling.dreamwidth.org/157195.h |

You are, without a doubt, one of the best and smartest writers in this fandom. You can make my heart ache for characters and pairings I would normally not give a damn about, and write kinks that don't generally interest me in ways that leave me begging for more. Your smut is hot enough to burn my whole bloody apartment building down, but it's never a mere PWP. Your stories, no matter how short or porny, always say something -- about a character, a pairings, a situation, a possibility -- and the message is always interesting. I don't want to just gush about your writing, though, because you're so much more than a collection of fics. I think what's most remarkable about you is that you're a genuinely nice person who loves fandom for all the right reasons. I've seen that you enjoy meeting other talented people around here, getting to know them, and interacting with them. Your enthusiasm for reading/viewing, reccing, and participating in fandom in general is wonderful to see. I love your posts full o' squee. Oh, you can get your snark on with the best of 'em at times. ::grin:: But you're also one of the most supportive, generous, and approachable people I've met. Don't ever leave, eh? It's people like you that make HP fandom the awesome place that it is. Happy Birthday, Lee!!! If you don't know what the heck this is all about, the explanation is here. |

You're another one of those people who's just been around forever, and without whom this place would feel oddly empty. After all this time, you still have so much enthusiasm, and do such a tremendous amount for the fandom and your ship. It's likely that you often don't receive the appreciation that you deserve, but I want to thank you for all your hard work. Thank you, also, for reading and commenting on my fic, and for being supportive in general. And while I'm at it, thank you again for the completely rockin' Snack fic you wrote for me last year at this time (yeah, I remember)! LOL You're a super mod and organizer, a fantastic writer, and on top of all of that, you seem to be an incredibly interesting and nice person. I'd like to know you better, and I really should make an effort to comment on your journal posts more frequently. If you don't know what the heck this is all about, the explanation is here. |

FACT: When you are used to writing antagonistic pairings, writing friendship pairings is hard. And features way too many OOC fights before the sex. :/ FACT: I heard some old Heart song on... Also, it has now become the soundtrack for my ... but man, those chicks could rock, riiiight? *air guitar* FACT: The S.O. and I just heroically got out, by exploiting a technicality, of a horrible Thanksgiving dinner we were supposed to go to tomorrow, hosted by the distant relations of a pseudo-acquaintance. Americans, I love you and appreciate that you love Thanksgiving so much, but honestly, I usually have better things to do FACT: Fabulous art recs are fabulous! Before I head back into writing lockdown, here, have some art! Till Death Do Us Part by Anon at Mind the warnings, please: this is a very dark piece, thematically. It stunned the breath right out of me with its implications. It made me super uncomfortable and want to weep for humanity, in a way, but it's also an astonishing piece, both artistically and conceptually. Very highly recommended, but not easy to take in. Pensive by Utterly stunning. a;lskdjf. I cannot even put into words how gorgeous and erotic this portrait is. As You Witch by Anon at Yeah, ANON. *coughcough* Just about as anon as the first piece up there. :D There is no reason in the universe for this piece not having about 8 times as many comments as it currently does. It's fabulous. Teddy and Victoire by Erica is drawing next-gen portraits!!! *runs around flailing* "Looking for these, Potter?" by Because I never, ever get tired of tbranch's Pansy, or Harry/Pansy. *purr* Lily/Lorcan/Lysander by Because this post did not have nearly enough porn in it. :D Well, this isn't just porn. It's actually really gorgeous, with the positioning and the lighting and things like that. *nod* It's also hot like burning, okay, and I don't even care what you think of the next-gen characters or who Lorcan and Lysander are or whatever. HOT LIKE BURNING. See something you like? Leave a bit of feedback for a talented artist today! *runs back to writing* |

About two weeks ago I watched an episode of the television show Criminal Minds for the first time. I usually avoid police procedural show but I was interested because rock star Gavin Rossdale was guest-starring as a sort of strung-out vampire rock star (not that I’m exactly a Gavin Rossdale fan, but I liked him well enough in Watching the show I ended up being pretty impressed by androgynous boy genius Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) so yesterday when I saw there were reruns showing on several channels I ended up watching a couple episodes. When not ogling Matthew Gray Gubler’s cheekbones, I was pleased to discover that Mandy Patinkin was on the earlier episodes of the show. I’ve had a thing for Mandy Patinkin for about 20 years—when I was in high school I listened obsessively to his recording of the musical Evita. Patinkin was gone in more recent episodes of the show, but I found myself surprised and unexpectedly pleased by another character, an FBI computer technician called Penelope Garcia (Kristen Vangsness). Now I’ve always loved support staff type characters, from secretaries Marilyn (Northern Exposure) and Elaine (Ally McBeal) to sour techie Chloe (24) but in addition to her behind-the-scenes sort of position the thing about Garcia that really endeared her to me was that she was a female character on a mainstream television show who was not skinny. She was cute and sexy and curvy and plump and voluptuous. I don’t follow a lot of television shows but I honestly can’t think of the last time I saw a not skinny female character. Probably teenaged Sara Rue on Popular (she ended up slimming down for her own show Less Than Perfect). I’ve watched a grand total of 3 ¾ episodes of Criminal Minds, so for all I know Garcia might be a totally stereotypical “overweight” character who does nothing but provide comic relief talk about diets but I don’t think so. It seemed to me like there was some sort of romantic thing going on between her and FBI agent, Morgan, and generally she seemed like someone who was really competent and well regarded by her peers. I’m really curious now to watch more of the show and she how she’s handled. ![]() ![]() A couple super adorable pics of Kristen Vangsness as Penelope Garcia |

Tomorrow my grandmother, parents and I are going to be having Thanksgiving dinner at a neighbor’s house. Given my food issues Thanksgiving is always a little uncomfortable for me but oddly I’m not feeling my usual degree of anxiety this year. I think it helps that I haven’t had to spend the last week dealing with the insanity of holiday crowds at an urban supermarket. Also I don’t have to work on the holiday itself so I’ll have time to relax and do anything I need to do before hand instead of rushing to work at Yesterday I went to the dentist for the first time in 12 years (I know it’s been 12 years because the last time I went was right before my little brother graduated from college which would make it 1997). It’s almost unforgivably irresponsible to let that much time lapse between dental visits. I have lots of excuses. I hate going to the dentist. Because I was bulimic in high school I had to suffer through some extensive dental work when I was in my late teens and early 20’s. Frankly, it was traumatic. Also I haven’t had dental insurance since 1998 and I don’t like paying out of pocket to be subjected to pain. Before I went for my appointment I was absolutely horrified that my teeth would be in such bad shape I’d need hours of expensive dental work to save them (I have recurring nightmares about losing my teeth). Luckily my teeth were in pretty good shape considering the amount of time it’s been. I’ll need a filling but that’s it. Obviously I’m not looking forward to my follow-up appointment after Christmas but it’s a huge relief to know that my teeth are more or less okay. |

Hmm. I'm not finding a couple of the blog posts I'd spotted yesterday, that aren't related to the adult privs checklist but were about child agency and the concept that kids, acting like kids, in public, is something the public should just deal with--kids are people, and age-appropriate behavior isn't something that should be kept out of sight of nonparents. Some of these have fascinating comment threads. And by "fascinating," I mean "soaked in privilege and offensive as hell." Related but not necessarily connected posts: Nov 3, Noble Savage: On Child Hate and Feminism "Participating in child-bashing is participating in the oppression of a vulnerable group. … admitting that motherhood went from overrated to undervalued in 40 years flat isn’t something many of us want to acknowledge." Oct 23, Look Left of the Pleiades: People who dance between tables "Having a need for age-specific support should not make anyone any less human." Apr 23, Have A Lovely Time: I'm sorry, does my children's presence offend you? "HOW do you cope when your arrival leads to an immediate and sharp intake of breath from the other customers?" Aug 8, Syracuse.com opinion blog: Discrimination against special needs is unacceptable "They had just as much a right to patronize that restaurant as anyone else. They deserved to be welcomed with respect and kindness. This was not the case." (Does not mention whether younger children without disabilities would be equally accepted.) Adult Privilege Sound-off: Nov 24, Dr. Helen: Your right to bring your screaming child on a plane ends where the rest of our ears begin. "If a kid does not understand how to act in certain settings, teach him or her or don't put them in that setting until they are older. The world will be a better (and quieter) place." Nov 24, Tim Cavanaugh at Reason: No Child's Left Behind "here is (very unscientific) evidence that spanking is poised for a comeback" (With special bonus racism in the comments!) April 8, Guardian: There comes a time when you want to live without children "To buy a property in the village, you have to be 45-plus with no dependent family in tow, and you must sign a contract agreeing not to sell property on to those with children." I may or may not find time to make a coherent post about this anytime soon. This one's important to me; the way we treat children in this country ranges from atrocity to tragedy. But it's late; I have to be up in five and a half hours (because, heh, one of my kids does not mesh well with public school). As a placeholder, have some linkspam: Nov 16 @ Shut Up, Sit Down: Adult Privilege Checklist Reading a post by Elena Perez at California NOW made me think about privilege checklists (like the Male Privilege Checklist and the White Privilege Checklist, for example) and I came to the realisation that, as yet, nobody had written an adult privilege checklist. So with some help from my good friend Jenny, using some of Elena Perez’s ideas from the aforementioned post, I set about writing the Adult Privilege Checklist. Background; older posts: April 13, Mothers For Women's Lib: You’ll never truly be “child free” Oct 22, Raising My Boychick: Dancing between the tables: on the personhood of children Nov 11, California NOW: Feminist Parenting: The Larger Picture Nov 4, Left of the Pleiades: Dear Kate Harding Reactions: Saraspeaking: Mind. Blown. This entry is crossposted at http://elf.dreamwidth.org/284122.html. |
