I'm so excited about Portus this weekend! I'm all packed--I think…I'm not bringing any porn, which feels weird! I am bringing a couple of surprises…including the crackiest costume ever for the Masquerade Ball! *bounces impatiently* Is it Thursday yet? In other fannish news, I've finally gotten the majority of my stories uploaded to both Skyehawke and Walking the Plank, thanks to Snarry Games amnesty. Honestly, I hadn't even uploaded my Merry Smutmas from 06 yet! *hangs head in shame* I just have a few things yet to archive, mostly co-written things, like the this dirty wrong piece of priest porn I posted with And the best for last--thanks so much for bidding on me over on Live Long N Marry I'm just so…amazed at everyone's generosity and I'm looking forward to tackling whatever story the winning bidder desires! *tries to look sultry* *fails miserably* |

Well, it's certainly been awhile. I haven't been reading tonnes lately, alas, due to time constraints, but I've been on QR duty a fair bit, and thus have had the opportunity to see some real gems. Among my faves: FIC: Sweet Perfume Comes From Crushing Flowers by Bitter and twisted by a world that doesn’t meet his expectations, Draco Malfoy takes it out on anything and anyone who catches his attention. Lily Potter never stood a chance. Right, so, I've seen thousands upon thousands of musings lately about how fabulous it would be if Draco or Harry corrupted one of the other's children, as a revenge type of thing. I know most of you out there are slashers, and alas, there is no Albus Severus, James II, or Scorpius to be found here, but in case you're interested in Lily possibilities for that scenario... oh sweet Jesus. Look no further. This won't be for everyone, obviously. Lily is 15, and there are more than a few consent issues. I anticipate some readers not getting on board with this Draco characterisation, either. Oh yes: Humbert Humbert, thy name is Draco Malfoy here. Not maybe quite as severe, if these things have a spectrum, but that's who he reminded me of. Whenever I read (adult) Draco, which admittedly isn't terribly often, but still: the trend seems to be that he's changed since school, that he's not an evil little bastard anymore. This story begins with the premise that not only has he not changed since school - he's become even worse. *evil grin* I loved this story. It's appalling and horrifying precisely because it's so believable. And Harry, God, I just. Just. *squeezes him so hard* Really, really intense story. Slow by Tragedy can bring a family closer together. For the Potters it tears them apart, as they each try to cope in different ways. I loved the premise of this story as soon as I figured out what it was, because it's so painfully realistic. It's sad as hell, so don't go near it if you're feeling fragile, but there is also so much hope in Lily that I just wanted to bundle her up and squeeze her. Also, she hates her cousin Rose for being a giant twat, and I loved that detail to little itty bitty pieces, again for the realism of the awful enforced family-time when all you want to do is tell everyone to fuck off. :) I think this is actually part of a ART: Grief by Oh, man. This is already hot as hell, but then you read the artist's explanation of it, and your eyes roll back in your head. Not for the faint of heart, and I don't think I've ever seen J/S dub-con before, actually, but the bunched clothing and anguished faces of it just tear me up. It's brilliant. The Dark Room by MWPP-era orgy at Hogwarts. Need I say more? The Remus/Sirius alone is gorgeous. Uniform Makes the Wizard by A wizard soldier, folks. How fucking cool is that?!?! SUPER COOL, I say. Lupin/Tonks by No, I know, and don't look at me like that about the pairing, because they look so miserable! Glee! As Carrot said to me when I commented, "They're so sad. They know they're dead." WIN! Macabre, sure, but come on. How else am I supposed to enjoy this pair? ;) I might actually be able to get into them, if they always looked this goth/morbid. Lonely by Oh, the scenario here is so gorgeous and tragic and sad and lonely and I just, a;lskjdg. OH, BOYS! *squishes them* That's all. Back to writing and RL deadlines. :( Go ahead and leave a comment for the author or artist if you see something you enjoy! |

I want to squee and I don't want to do it on a post that I'll be referring to in increasingly frantic spurts over the next few months. There's nothing worse when you're in a dry spot than seeing evidence of a wet spot. Err... well you know what I mean. Not only is my muse back, but I am so very much in love with the things I'm writing. I've written close to 8k in the last two days and I want to make love to each and every word. Slow, sweet, really dirty love. :D No porn written, either. It's been mostly dialogue and plot. Of course, there's nothing that gets me going quite like the flow of good dialogue, but I'm really really happy with everything. My Die Hard fic is just flowing straight off my fingers. As soon as I think, "Oh, shit, I finished that scene, what now?" a new one bursts forth almost fully-formed in my mind. It's lovely. It's lovely and I want to revel in it! My Why can't writing always be like this? Why do I have to wait months at a time to get a really good idea and go with it? Why can't everyone just leave me plots to write? *glares half-heartedly at flist* Y'all know I suck at coming up with decent plots on my own. Ah, well. I'm having fun. YAY!! |

Fuck, three weeks since my last post? Wow, do I suck dead green bunnies through a straw. That all ends today. I'm officially breaking with abstinence and going on a fandom-fuck-for-all. Starting tomorrow, there will be art recs on Tuesdays and lively discussions on Thursdays. Fuck, remember when I did discussions? There may even be some blather in-between. Sound good? Well, fuck you if it doesn't :P Some chatter (fannish or otherwise) to think about. Death Note is the best anime to come out in ten years. My love for L knows no bounds. Anyone watch the 2008 Nathan's hot dog eating contest? One word: Kobayashi. Any orange-haired hotness that can eat 60 hot dogs in ten minutes leaves NOTHING. TO. MY. IMAGINATION. *G* The Magic 8 Ball says 'OUTLOOK VERY GOOD' for Terminus. Still writing like a champ. See you all tomorrow :-) --P |

Hi! ::waves:: I still exist! I realize I haven't posted any "real life" updates in a while. I haven't had much to say. At least, not much that would be positive. Pretty much everything was sucking like a Hoover a little while back. A lot of problems have now resolved themselves, for better or for worse. I'm mainly just left with a tremendous amount of academic angst. But... I just had the most awesome lunch. Maybe it's odd, but in the summer I tend to crave bread, cheese, and fruit a lot. So I just had a huge plate full of French bread, cheddar cheese, brie cheese, grapes, blackberries, and mango slices. The weather here is much cooler today than was originally forecasted, so I sat in front of an open window and enjoyed the breeze while having lunch. Yes, this is completely pointless, trivial information. But see, while I was eating my cheese and fruit, I realized something. It's been a long time since I was able to sit back and enjoy little things like this. If I'm able to find some enjoyment in these sorts of things, and even feel somewhat positive about my life for a few moments, then I'm doing a hell of a lot better than I was a month or two ago. Today, I'm happy that I can occasionally afford to buy unnecessary things like brie and outrageously overpriced blackberries. I'm thrilled that I haven't had to wait tables in almost two years. I'm able to see the positives about my life again. I'm very, very stressed with grad school right now. As I said, there's a lot of academic angst and doubt weighing me down. But, today at least, I'm feeling like maybe everything isn't hopeless. Brie is good. |

Yesterday I had lunch with my sister, her husband and kids and my brother-in-law’s mother and sister at the Hancock building. Traffic was light because of the holiday so I was able to bike in. There are people I work with who regularly bike 20+ miles a day but for me the five miles from my place near Logan Square downtown and back was a pretty long ride, definitely the longest I’ve attempted this year and it left me pretty exhausted. This may have been for the best because I was actually able to sleep last night despite the war zone like noise levels that go along with the 4th of July. Still, I do think I might need to start adjusting my calorie intake a bit for my level of activity. I’m riding my bike fairly regularly now and I know that burns more calories than my usual walking but I’m still eating the same amount (around 1800 calories per day which according to thedailyplate.com is a little less than maintenance level for a sedentary person of my size). I’ve been quite tired the past couple of days but also restless, I can’t seem to concentrate on anything and I think it may have to do with this but I’m afraid to eat more. Every time I do manage to eat 1850 or 1900 calories during the course of a day I usually counter it by doing extra exercise or eating less the next day. I find it very frustrating that it’s still so difficult for me to make these adjustments. On a more positive note lunch went well. Everything seemed okay with my sister and I talked and had a nice time without drinking (or really eating since we had lunch at The Cheesecake Factory where about the only item that fits my caloric restrictions and vegetarian standards is a dry side salad). I don’t get downtown very often so following lunch I decided to pay a visit to the nearby MCA (
I picked up the handout that explained it, which I quote here: “Participants who would like to make a commitment to peace are offered a free buzz cut. By having their heads shaved, the artist believes that the participants are acknowledging their connection to a larger world around them. In doing so, she believes that they are symbolizing their solidarity with out soldiers at war and honoring their sacrifices in their ongoing commitment to create peace. Furthermore, my shaving one’s head O’Brien hopes that the individual is released from a physical attachment since she sees attachment—to ideas and things—as the source of war. By shaving one’s head, the participant is choosing to be one step closer to peace.” I thought this was a pretty interesting idea. For me, cropped hair is associated not with soldiers but with holy people, monks and nuns. It also inverts the 60’s notion of long hair as a symbol of rebellion and peace loving. An interesting idea. And I’ve always been sort of curious about how I’d look with a shaved head. So I decided to give it a go. I have to admit a big part of my motivation to go through with it comes from the fact that I’m going to visit the parents in Upstate New York on the 14th. “How Far Will You Go For Peace”, a sign near the installation asked. I think I read it as “How far will you go to piss off your parents.” I’m still trying to decide if what I did was very bold or very stupid. I’ve never had my hair this short before so it’s going to take some getting used to. If nothing else it'll be interesting to see how it effects my lesbo street cred.

I had both Thursday and Friday (07/03 and 07/04) off so I ended up getting a bit of a holiday weekend. Thursday I did mostly mundane stuff—laundry, grocery shopping, seeing my therapist—but in the evening my brother-in-law took me to see Dario Argento’s Mother of Tears. It was playing at my favorite theater, the Music Box, which is one of the few old style, non-multi-plex movie houses left in Mother of Tears is the third installment in Argento’s Three Mothers Trilogy that began with the 1977 classic Suspiria (one of my favorite horror films) and continued Inferno (which I haven’t seen) in 1980. These movies deal with three sister witches—the Mother of Tears, The Mother of Sighs and the Mother of Darkness—who have houses in I’ve always preferred the chilling, atmospheric giallo of Argento’s early days to his latter work which is more baroque and vividly horrific. Still, Mother of Tears was a pretty enjoyable as a gory horror movie with strikingly bizarre imagery and minimal story. Many creative things were done with intestines, and some gorgeous Roman architecture was shown as packs of witches resembling Madonna circa 1983 descended on the ancient city. There was actually a strangely retro vibe to the whole film, as if it had come a few years after the previous chapters of the trilogy rather than nearly three decades later. All the witches wore new-wave make-up and the scariest witch, a Japanese girl with a silver front tooth reminded me of nothing so much as a particularly menacing Tama Janowitz. The heroine of the film was played by Dario Argento’s daughter My brother-in-law Dean had brought a bottle of citron vodka along and we had spiked cokes but I didn’t drink enough of mine to even get buzzed as vodka sort of turns my stomach. Even with the citrus flavoring it still tastes thick and chemical and sort of vile to me. I consider this repulsion a good sign. My ex-boyfriend, who was a recovering alcoholic, always said that one of the things that separated alcohol abusers from casual drinkers was that the abuser would drink anything available to the point of intoxication whereas the casual drinker tended to have personal preferences and wouldn’t drink if they couldn’t have something they enjoyed. I’ve been drinking again for a little over a month and it really is an experiment to see if I can drink socially and casually. So far I feel like I’m doing all right. I did go out of bounds at the party a couple weeks ago where I embarrassed my sister but I didn’t totally lose it. In the past I’ve often figured that once I go past a point I might as well relinquish all control and finish off the bottle. I didn’t do that this time and I think it’s because I’m trying to look at drinking differently, not as a huge cathartic experience I allow myself a couple times a year but as something I can incorporate into my life and do in moderation maybe once a week or so. As I said, it’s an experiment. If it doesn’t work I’ll probably go back to not drinking at all because I know how dangerous problem drinking can be. |
